Mrs. Kirchoff

Welcome to the Richardson Music Page!  At Richardson, we are lucky to have a comprehensive music education from Kindergarten through Sixth grade.  We are also fortunate to participate with many programs in our community such as the University of Arizona Up-Beat program, Tucson Symphony Orchestra Music in our Schools program, Arizona Operatunity, Desert Winds Recorder Ensemble, and the Music Instrument Museum educational field trips.

General Music

Students in kindergarten through third grade receive classes were they create, perform, and respond to Music (which are national music standards).  This includes singing, moving, listening, playing instruments, and reading and notating music.

Fourth graders spend their year learning to play the recorder utilizing the Recorder Karate curriculum.  This curriculum continues their general music studies and prepares them for band or orchestra in following years.  This program culminates with our Recorder Concert in April.

Fifth and Sixth graders who do not choose to participate in instrumental music (band or orchestra) continue their general music studies with an emphasis in music appreciation.

Instrumental Music

Students in grades Five and Six have the exciting opportunity to learn a band or orchestra instrument.  Instruction on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and string bass take place during Specials times.  Students learn the basics of their instrument in preparation for participating in the junior high and high school programs.  These students perform in District Festivals, Buddy Nights (where sixth graders perform with a high school group), and school concerts and special events.  Select sixth graders also participate in the Southern Arizona Band and Orchestra Festivals.

Richardson Singers

Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth graders who love to sing can join Richardson Singers!  We meet on Tuesdays from 2-3 p.m. We learn a lot of songs and choreography to perform at the Harvest Festival, District Choral Festival, Veteran’s Day, Faculty Follies, Grandparent’s  Day, and our end of the year concert.  This is the busiest performing group at our school!  No audition required, we just want enthusiastic members who can positively represent Richardson throughout our community.

Musicals

We have two musicals each year at Richardson, a primary musical (which rotates between first, second, and third grades) in December and the sixth grade musical in May.  These musicals give students an opportunity to sing, act, and dance.  You will be amazed by the costumes, sets, and especially the performers!  In the past we have performed, “The Elve’s Impersonator, A Gingerbread Christmas,” “On the Radio,” and “Broadway Beat,” just to name a few.
